Transmission Lubricants Technical Committee

Work in progress

CTLT has currently 5 active groups

  • GT1 – Tests for lubricating greases – A. Lopez (Shell Global solutions SA)
  • GT2 – Oxidation stability of transmission lubricants – J. Obiols (Total)
  • GT3 – 4 Ball Lubricant tester – Surveillance group – new organisation in 2003
  • GT8 – SAEII wet clutch friction – Surveillance group – A. Bouffet (ETSm)
  • GT9 – Brookfield viscosity of transmission lubricants – M. Maillard (Total)
Passed activities (work completed)
  • Gear efficiency
  • Foaming/air entrainment in transmission fluids
  • Transmission noise
  • Limited slip differential shudder
  • Synchronisation ring wear
  • Pitting and gear fatigue
  • Grease for centralised systems in heavy duty vehicles
  • Biodegradability of automotive lubricants
  • Oxidation stability: GFC work was later used in CEC PT-048 group to develop a CEC method.
  • Elastomer compatibility

6 methods have been submitted by GFC groups as official standards under BNPé or AFNOR control

  • Oxidation stability of lubricating oils used in automotive transmissions by artificial ageing
  • Insoluble content of lubricants after oxidation by artificial ageing
  • Grease
    • cone penetrations and water resistance
    • ability to prevent false Brinelling
  • Biodegradability
  • 4 Ball Lubricant testing
